Sporting Events
- The 2019 Women’s World Cup kicks off in France on June 7th, with the US looking to retain their title from 4 years ago.
- The 2019 Cricket World Cup begins May 30th in various venues throughout England and Wales hosting. Australia are the defending champions.
- Wimbledon, formally known as “The Championships, Wimbledon”, is held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London. 2019’s tournament will begin on July 1st.
- The 2019 Copa America, or the South American soccer championships, begins June 14th in host nation Brazil. All 10 South American nations participate with 2 other nations invited to join (this year being Japan and Qatar).
- The British Grand Prix will be held on July 14 at the famous Silverstone Circuit in England.
- Africa Cup of Nations, the African soccer championship, begins June 21 in Egypt. In total, 24 African nations will compete.
- Two golf majors will be played this summer. The US Open will be held on June 13-16 at Pebble Beach Golf Links, while the British Open (formally known as “The Open”) will be hosted at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland on July 14-21.
- Summer X Games begin June 1st in Shanghai.
- The 2019 World Police and Fire Games begin August 9th. This biennial athletic event is open to all active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the world and is the second most participated athletic competition behind the Summer Olympic Games. This year’s host city is Chengdu, China.
Festivals
- Glastonbury Festival, a five-day musical festival in England, will take place June 26-30. This festival is a notable one due to all attendees camping around the festival grounds. Headliners in 2019 include The Killers, The Cure, Stormzy, and Miley Cyrus.
- San Vino Wine Fight in La Rioja, Spain, where locals climb a mountain and throw the sweet red liquid all over each other. Then party afterward by drinking more; what’s not to love? This year’s event takes place on June 29.
- Comic Con International is where you want to be if you love comic books, movies, or anything science fiction. This year’s convention will be held on July 18-21 in San Diego, CA.
- The Just For Laughs Festival is home to the world’s best comedians all in one place. This year’s lineup includes Adam Sandler, Trevor Noah, Aziz Ansari, Wanda Sykes, and many more. Hosted in Montreal, Canada, this festival takes place from July 13-28.
- Edinburgh Fringe Festival, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, is the world’s largest arts festival. In previous years it has featured more than 55,000 performances. This year’s festival will take place from August 2-26.
- La Tomatina is a festival held in Bunol, Valencia, Spain on August 29. Tens of thousands come to fight in a harmless battle where more than 100 metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown into the streets.
- Notting Hill Carnival takes place on August 24-26 on the streets of London (near Kensington). Celebrations include costume-clad Caribbean’s dancing to traditional reggae as well as street vendors selling traditional foods.
- Swedish Midsummer takes place on June 22 this year. An annual tradition, this holiday celebrates by dancing around a maypole and eating outdoors with family and friends.
- Burning Man (August 25- September 2) is an annual event which takes place in a temporary city in the Black Rock Desert of northwest Nevada. This can be described as an experiment in community and art influenced by their ten main principles.
- Naadam Festival, which takes place in Mongolia on July 11-15, celebrates a combination of arts and sports. The core of this festival is three sports – wrestling, horseracing, and archery, but also embraces many elements of arts such as singing, dancing, and performing.
- The Boryeong Mud Festival is your excuse to act like a kid again! Held in South Korea every year, this festival is a celebration of living a care-free life and relaxing in some mud.
- Running of the Bulls (Pamplona, Spain) July 7 – 14 is the spot for adrenaline junkies. This event includes sprinting down narrow streets with thousand pound bulls chasing after you.
- Tomorrowland, held in Belgium, is an electronic dance music festival. This year’s dates are July 19-21 and the headliners include Tiesto, Chainsmokers, and Steve Aoki.
